About this activity
Abstract
Summary: ESA Webinar series on COVID-19: 6th Episode: COVID-19 pandemic – Views from insiders at the forefront
Hans-Christian Zaun, Ph.D.
Scientific Advisor, MULTILEARNING GROUP.

The sixth and final COVID-19 webinar from the European Society of Anaesthesiology brought together a diverse group of speakers to discuss their views of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Hosted by Dr. Ilona Bobek of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, Budapest, Hungary, with the assistance of Scientific Faculty Leader, Prof. Dr. Marcelo Gama de Abreu of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care,
University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden, Germany.

Prof. Dr. Kai Zacharwoksi, of the University Hospital Frankfurt, Germany, discusses the status and history of intensive care medicine in Europe. He begins by discussing the early success of intensive care medicine during the Polio pandemic in 1952, where a young patient from Copenhagen survived as a result of tracheotomy and hand-ventilation. Through the implementation of this intervention, the mortality rate in Copenhagen went from greater than 90% to roughly 25%. Currently, most Covid-19 patients are cared for by anaesthesiologists, and their role has been pivotal during this pandemic.

Prof. Carmen Barbas of Sao Paulo, Brazil, gives her view, not only as a critical care physician but as a Covid-19 patient. Prof Barbas begins by reviewing the physiology and infection of the SARS-Cov-2 virus as well as the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19. She continues by discussing the crucial parameters to monitor in patients, particularly increased respiratory rate and oxygen desaturation. Dr. Barbas also mentions the importance of using thoracic tomography, as COVID-19 may involve several different types of pulmonary involvement, including pulmonary fibrosis. She continues by reviewing several studies indicating that patients may also suffer from venous thromboembolism. Dr. Barbas presents her recommendations on the best ventilation practices for COVID-19 patients. Finally, she discusses her experience with recovery and rehabilitation, as well as advice on avoiding the spread of the virus.

Mr. Marlowe Hood, a reporter at Agence France-Presse (AFP), Paris, France, discusses his experiences in reporting the COVID-19 pandemic. He outlines how the press gathers information, chooses stories, and emphasizes the importance of obtaining reliable sources. Mr. Hood emphasizes how the need to collect and distribute medical information as quickly as possible during the pandemic, through preprints without peer review, resulted in numerous studies that would not be published under normal circumstances. When asked about the issue of disinformation and fake news, he mentions the importance of fact-checking.

The webinar continues with several members of the medical device industry and their view on the difficulties the industry faced in meeting demands during the pandemic. Dr. Jürgen Kelch of Getinge. Germany, Mrs. Stacey Orsat of Masimo, Switzerland and Mr. Pedro Vieira dos Santos of Medtronic, Portugal, discuss the issues with logistics and maintaining supply chains and the importance of maintaining quality as many non-medical companies began manufacturing ventilators. They also discussed the importance of working with health care professionals and of forming partnerships to deal with these issues in the future.
This webinar is Open-Access (no login required) and will be hosted on June 16 2020 18:00 - 19:30 CEST (GMT: 16:00 - 17:30).
