Dear Colleague,

You are about to participate in the fourth edition of the ESA Patient Safety and Quality Masterclass, an evolution of previous editions of the Patient Safety Master Course (Stockholm, 2014), the European Patient Safety Courses (2006-2016) and three editions of Patient Safety and Quality Masterclasses (2016-2018).

This course is possible thanks to the collaboration between the ESA Secretariat, ESA Patient Safety and Quality Committee and the University Hospital Heidelberg (Germany).

We have worked hard to provide you with a different experience during the face to face time. We are hosted by the Department of Anaesthesiology of the University Hospital Heidelberg, one of Germany’s largest medical centres. Here, we’ll split our time between seminar work, group discussions/exercises and simulation. We are dedicated to offering you a mixture of background knowledge, a solid theoretical foundation, as well as relevant practical solutions to the patient safety challenges we all face every day.

Moreover, there will be a full section dedicated to the “patients’ perspective” and the way patients perceive safety in healthcare. Jamie King will join the MC faculty to share his experience regarding both a medical mishap as well as the surrounding medical negligence, safety guidelines and litigation culture within the healthcare system.

Your Masterclass starts long before you arrive in Heidelberg! The online part of the course provides both basic and advanced reading material. Following previous editions, we have greatly expanded the pre- and post-course online content to provide you with more material, current literature and background information to enhance your Masterclass experience. We know that you are busy in the crazy reality of medical care. However, we kindly ask you to check and read at least the Basic Reading in preparation for the class. We are trying to create the best and most efficient experience possible for you during your three days in Heidelberg, and we can maximize that with a solid foundation in Patient Safety knowledge to build upon. To help you with the preparation, we are happy to answer any of your questions that might arise in preparation for the Masterclass. Simply use the ESA Academy online forum to get in touch with us, we’d love to hear from you!

You can view and download the Programme for the European Patient Safety and Quality Masterclass 2019 here on this site and information on how to get to the venue is also available in the section entitled “Programme and Location”.

The course will be intensive and participative.  Faculty will share their experiences and expect that you share yours. Be prepared for it.

We are very much looking forward to meeting you in Heidelberg!

The programme contains a series of lectures, simulations and interactive workshops during which participants will apply their knowledge through practical exercises.

Educational targets focus on the following goals:

  1. To provide a theoretical update on different aspects of the current state of the art in the different fields of patient safety and quality in anaesthesiology
  2. To provide the possibility to train skills and learn new techniques with regard to the different required practical skills for the anaesthesiologists in the management of clinical risk, hazards and quality of care.(workshops, role playing and full-scale high-fidelity simulations)
  3. To provide a forum of scientific exchange with peers and possibility to discuss therapeutic options with key opinion leaders.
