A joint session with the emergency medicine subcommittee. A symposium which looks at what can happen when a doctor finds themselves having to provide emergency care outwith clinical environments unexpectedly. The session starts with Dr. Sandell who is both a doctor and a barrister for one of Londons top international law firms (and also a qualified pilot) and will set the scene, talking about good samaritan laws and duty of care laws in Europe. This will lead into a talk from Prof. Mike Bagshaw, the professor of aviation medicine at Kings College London, former chief medic for BA and a medical test pilot in the RAF talking on in-flight emergencies; what can happen, how can flying affect physiology and pathology, what can you actually do when called to assist, and what other things might you have to consider. The session concludes with Prof Matthias Helm lending his military and mass casualty experience to talk on ethical decision making and triage during major incidents
