Topic: Obstructive Sleep Apnea in the Perioperative Period

Despite the recognition that untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with long term morbidity and mortality, the negative influence of OSA on perioperative outcomes has only been recently recognized. The issue is further complicated by the fact that approximately one in four surgical patients may suffer form the disease and that up to 80% of patients with OSA, remain undiagnosed and thus untreated at the time of their presentation for surgery.
Considerable knowledge gaps exist among anesthesia providers on how to diagnose and treat patients suffering from OSA presenting for surgery.
In this context, a number of societies have sought to provide guidance to physicians in respect to their perioperative management. However, these recommendations are largely based on expert opinion as the scientific evidence base is still being developed.
In order to promote education and research in this field, the Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine was founded as a multidisciplinary entity inviting physicians from all perioperative fields. The proposed symposium has the objective to: 1) introduce the work our society, 2) discuss the impact that OSA has on perioperative outcomes, 3) discuss management strategies, and 4) review various guidelines including those developed by SASM.
