Non-invasive ventilation is gaining increasing foothold in many clinical situations. In this symposium the speakers will summarize the growing body of literature that is promoting this movement. The speaker on cardiopulmonary resuscitation will discuss the ongoing trials in the prehospital arena. While this does not seem immediately relevant to anesthsiologists one should remember that it remains to be seen whether intubation performed by doctors that are not experienced anesthesiologists in the hospital, are necessarily performed better than those performed by experienced paramedics in the field. The speaker on postextubation NIV will be presenting data from several clinical trials supported by ESA that have only just come out. The speaker on immunecompromised patients will be discussing the place of NIV in the treatment algorithm of these patients based on the most recent data on this topic.
