Until recently the sole emphasis in resuscitation training was on prehospital care. However, since Negovsky first descibed the "Post Resuscitation Syndrome" there has been increasing awareness that post resuscitation care may ultimate neurologically intact survival. Patients that achieve return of spontaneous circulation after cardiac arrest are usually admitted to coronary care units. This practice has led to near exclusion of these patients from intensive care trials. In the last decade several authors have, for the first time, attempted to adress important post-resuscitataon care issues: namely targeted temperature management, ventilation and withdrawal of care. Attendees of this symposium will hear summaries of the state of the art regarding each of these issues directly from the experts on these topics who are running some of these trials.
